About the Joe Murphy Scholarship Fund
The Joe Murphy Comedy Award was created in 2001 by friends and family members of Joe Murphy '85. The honorary award is presented each year to an Emerson graduating senior who excels at comedy and intends to pursue it as a career. Joe was a founding member of the "This is Pathetic" comedy group and a mentor to many writers and performers. He died in 1994 after a battle with cancer.
About the Comedians
Anthony Clark
Anthony began performing standup while still at Emerson and got his break in New York clubs. After touring the country doing comedy, he appeared on several TV shows, including Boston Common, based on a certain school's student union. He starred as Greg Warner in the long-running sitcom, Yes, Dear. Anthony has appeared in films and on Broadway in the award-winning production of The Grapes of Wrath. A favorite highlight of his career-being accepted into "This is Pathetic."
Marly Halpern-Graser
Marly Halpern-Graser graduated from Emerson College in 2007, where he concentrated on film and screenwriting. During his school years he was active in the Boston comedy scene as a stand up and sketch writer/performer, performing at The Comedy Studio, Improv Boston and The Comedy Vault, among others. He was a part of the successful comedy group "Zebro Show", which performed in Boston and New York, before making a valiant attempt to take over the internet. After college he was whisked away to sunny Burbank, CA and given a job at Warner Bros., where he and his friends were tasked with creating web series and ultimately an animated pilot. Since being in LA, Marly has performed at such notable venues as the UCB Theater and The Comedy Store, as well as at "The Great and Secret Show", "Punk House", and "Who’s Available Tuesday Nights". He currently works as a comedy writer for Warner Bros. Animation, where he is paid to sit in a cubicle and think about Scooby-Doo for eight hours a day.
Alicyn Packard
As a stand up comic, Alicyn's unique brand of humor and musical comedy has graced the stages of comedy clubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston. You can catch her on the road in January as the opening act for headliner Dwayne Perkins. Alicyn is also a series regular on Cartoon Network's Emmy-nominated animated program, The Mr. Men Show and as the singing voice of the Little Miss Sunshine Toy, currently available nationwide. Other series credits include the hit series Olivia currently airing on Nickelodeon, a starring role in the animated pilot Sticky Buns, and the lead in the animated short Perdita Smiles. She has gained the attention of legions of video game enthusiasts through her work on Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and as the Female Blood Elf in the international smash hit, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. Iliza Shlesinger
Iliza graduated from Emerson college in May of 2005. Since then she has been doing stand up in and around Los Angeles. Her coolest achievement is winning NBC'S Last Comic Standing in 2008. From that Iliza has made appearances on Chelsea Lately, Carson Daly, Showtime, Howard Stern, was named G4's “Hottest Comedian on the Web” and is a new correspondent on The Jay Leno Show. Iliza is the writer and anchor of The Weakly News on www.TheStream.tv and is a paid regular at all the big comedy clubs in LA and tours clubs and colleges year round. Howie Weiner
Howie Weiner has performed stand up since the 80s. He wrote and acted along with Joe Murphy in the NYC comedy groups “Wetdog” and “Swordfish Theater”. His web series, Drive ME Krazy, is in pre-production. He is currently completing his comic novel, based on his adventures in the world of alternative health. His knowledge and experience of the great benefits of mind/body practice is firsthand. He is a hypnotherapist at www.VictoryHypnosis.com.
